Van Newkirk Herefords
Van Newkirk Herefords is a family owned ranching operation. The cattle ranching began in 1892 when L.D. Van Newkirk started mating purebred Hereford bulls to his long horn cross cows.
In 1944 L.D.'s son, A.J. (Bud) Van Newkirk started the registered herd of Herefords with the purchase of 5 females from Erlewine's in Ogallala, NE. Additional females were added over the years from other area breeders.
The last 30 years the herd has basically been closed with herd bull purchases from CK Ranch, Kansas, and Carpenter-Williams in Colorado and Canadian bulls from Doenz in Alberta. Also used have been several home-raised herd sires.
Today the operation is managed by Joe and Cyndi Van Newkirk and their family. Our core business is selling Hereford bulls to western high plains cattlemen. Repeat buyers are the heart and soul of our operation.
The cowherd is managed as any good commercial cowherd operation. The cows graze 9 months a year on sand hill grass and crop residues. The calves receive no creep feed. We save only the top one half of the bull calf crop for our annual bull sale in January.
